## abstract What is Abstract? Abstract is a Layer 2 (L2) network built on Ethereum that is meant to safely run blockchain apps for consumers on a large scale with low fees and fast transaction speeds. Abstract is a zero-knowledge (ZK) rollup that is built on top of the ZK Stack. It is meant to be a more scalable alternative to Ethereum. It does this by executing transactions off-chain, grouping them together, and then using (ZK) proofs to verify groups of transactions on Ethereum. Abstract works with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), so it looks and feels like Ethereum, but it has lower gas fees and can handle more transactions at once. Smart contracts that already work with Ethereum will also work with Abstract (with some differences).
